Types of Grain



The grain size combined with the toasting level must be adapted to the grape varieties and the wine making style. Usually, fine grained wood is preferred for long ageing. Semi-fine and medium grains work well for shorter ageing programs.

Tight grain  
• Maximum 2 mm between growth rings.
• Main origins: Allier, Vosges and Romania.
Semi-fine grain  
• From 2 to 6 mm between growth rings.
• Main origins: Nevers, Vosges and Romania.
Medium grain  
• From 6 mm and more between growth rings.
• Main origins: Nevers and Limousin.
 

The American oak is a blend of fine, semi fine and medium grains.
